Church History
The church stands on the southern
edge of the village and was first mentioned in 1190 when
Robert of Wallington gave the church and some land to
the monks of St Albans abbey. In the 15th
century the porch, tower, north aisle and the chantry
chapel were added. The chantry screen and pews date
from that century and are still in use. Major
restoration work has been carried out encompassing the
whole of the exterior walls, porch and tower. For the
restoration work a Civic Award was presented to the
church by North Hertford-shire District Council. The
organ is a fine Scudmore instrument built by William
Hill in the late 19th century. St
Mary's contains two interesting graffiti, a warrior with
spear and shield and a hobbyhorse. There are four
beautiful carved angel figures in the roof (rare in
Hertfordshire). There is a ring of six bells, much in
demand by visiting bell ringing teams. George Orwell
(Eric Blair) was married in the church on 9 June 1936.
He was well liked, a villager and a shopkeeper.
