History
Although the
present building is very largely the result of
rebuilding in 1875-8, there is a record in the domesday survey
of 1086 that a priest was among the inhabitants of
Therfield, implying a church building at that time.
The first
feature seen on entering the church is the late 14th
century octagonal stone font. The tower at the west end
contains six bells set for chiming; the oldest bell
dates from 1597 and the newest from 1707. A double piscina
from the 15th century, once used for washing
sacred vessels, was discovered when the chancel was
being dismantled before rebuilding. It had been out of
sight since a previous rebuilding in 1678. A triple
sedilia, seats for the clergy, from the 15th
century also came to light; these are set into the south
wall near the altar. There is an example of a Stuart
royal coat of arms over the door as you leave the
church, which before the rebuilding, hung above the
tower arch. It is possible that the arms were placed
there by the Reverend Francis Turner in celebration of
the restoration of Charles II in 1660.
