Church History
The nave dates from about 1350.
The chancel was built in 1847 on foundations of the
previous chancel, which had fallen down. The west tower
is of three stages with an embattled parapet. There is
no Hertfordshire spike, although one can be seen in a
drawing of 1831. The south porch is modern, but the
doorway is 14th century. The windows in the
south wall date from the late 15th century,
as is the window in the north wall, although the
design is different. There was a gallery across the
west end of the church, put up in the late 17th
century and removed in 1907.
In 1907 the
church was in a bad way, the walls of the nave were
cracked and threatened to fall out and the timberwork of
the nave was dangerously decayed. Today we can see it
all in a good state of repair. Rushden church has stood
on its little hill for six hundred years, looking not
very different from the day it was built.
