Church History
The nave and
north aisle were built in the 13th century or
earlier. The south aisle, clerestory and tower
followed in the 15th century. There is a 12th
century font, a good set of six 17th century
bells and a fine 19th century clock, all in
regular use. Extensive alterations and refurbishment
took place in the 19th century. An organ
chamber and a porch, not shown in the line drawing, were
added and the chancel rebuilt. Ten fine stained glass
windows were installed with fine pews, pulpit and tiled
floors. There are many old and delightfully grotesque
gorbels inside and out. Much recent work has been done
to make the church waterproof and damp-free, and it is
now in excellent condition.
St Nicholas
church, of which St John's College in Cambridge has held
the patronage for around two hundred years, is situated
on a hill above and outside the village, since the
squire at Hormead Bury originally built it next door for
his own convenience.
