Church History
It is thought
that Layston was a plague village, and afterwards the
settlement of Buntingford (first recorded in 1185),
which is situated on the old Roman road of Ermine
Street, used the church of St Bartholomew as its parish
church. Unfortunately the River Rib was liable to
flood, and so St Bartholomew's church was often out
of reach in winter.
A chapel of St
John the Baptist was used, but it fell into disrepair.
In 1614 a new church was built as a chapel-of-ease with
money collected by the then Vicar, Alexander Strange.
The back part of St Peter's clearly shows the original
Greek cross-shaped building to which pieces have been
added. It is believed to be the oldest brick church in
the country.
St
Bartholomew's church is no longer open for use, largely
for safety reasons. The major part of the roof
was removed many years ago. However, the parish
graveyard is still situated there, as St Peter's itself
has no surrounding land.
It is a popular
area for walks and the sight of the tower, which can be
viewed rising above the trees from the northern end of
the town, is one which is held in affection by
Buntingford dwellers.
